With four project members based in the School of Philosophy at University College Dublin, The American Voice in Philosophy is an interdisciplinary initiative aiming to foreground the literary and historical dimensions of philosophy in America. It is our stated aim to broaden the scope of American philosophy from the analytic tradition as narrowly understood to the discipline’s potential affinities with U.S. intellectual history and literary studies. To date, the project has secured a number of awards and grants. We are grateful to the Irish Research Council, the Society for Advancement of American Philosophy, UCD School of Philosophy, International Journal of Philosophical Studies, UCD Research, and UCD’s Clinton Institute for American Studies.
The first three strands of the project have successfully completed. Strand 1, “The American Style in Philosophy”, took the form of a two-day international conference at University College Dublin in June 2012. Strand 2, “Philosophical Revolutions: Pragmatism, Analytic Philosophy and Phenomenology, 1895-1935”, was organised to coincide with a companion conference on Philosophies of Philosophy commemorating the twenty fifth anniversary of UCD’s internationally ranked philosophy journal, the International Journal of Philosophical Studies. Strand 3, “Philosophy, Literature, America”, also a two-day international conference, took place in May 2014.
